Botanical Description

Stems 5-70cm tall. Leaves 3-8cm long, oblanceolate to linear. Flowers secund, 1.7-3cm long, light blue to blue-violet. In sagebrush, oak, manzanita, ponderosa pine, aspen, spruce, limber pine, and bristlecone pine association at 2000-3500m on Utah plateau and Nevada. Vivid blue flowers and attractive habit, but unfortunately, virtually unknown in cultivation. P.l. subsp. leiophyllus is 15-70cm tall with leaves 5-20mm wide. P.l. subsp. francisci-pennellii is 5-20cm tall with leaves 2-5mm wide, usually folded and arched, the flowers 2.5-3.5cm long. Nevada. P.l. var. keckii has leaves as in previous variety, flowers 1.8-2.3cm long. Endemic to the Charleston Mts.
