Tufted to clump-forming, the short rhizomes covered with twisted scales. Leaves 5-15cm or more tall, having glossy, bright brown stalks and pinnate blades to 3.5cm wide, composed of six to twelve pairs of bilobed pinnae. Western U.S.A., in exposed dry rocky places and montane coniferous forest at 2100-3650m. Worth trying outside in vertical rock garden crevices.
