A variable species typically forming broad mats of foliage from a branching root crown. Leaves oblanceolate, 5cm long, pale green above, white tomentose beneath. Flowers yellow on 10-20cm stems. Rocky Mountains, British Columbia southwards. E.f. var. xanthum (AH). A high altitude phase forming cushions of silvery foliage with stemless flowers which open yellow and fade to red. Alpine summits, Colorado.
