with decumbent stems to 60cm or more in length. Leaves numerous, clustered, narrowly oblong to narrowly oblanceolate, 6-15mm long, strongly revolute, almost hairless above, white woolly beneath. Flowering stems leafless, up to 10cm long, bearing loose cymose heads. Flowers about 7mm long, white or pink. Summer to autumn. California, in coastal sagebrush and dry slopes. Not hardy in the open garden. E.f. subsp. polifolium is hoary and taller, 20-30cm, and ascends to 2100m. If collected high up in its range it is hardier but still best in the alpine house.
