Similar to V. canadensis, but generally somewhat smaller in all its parts. Usually about 20cm high, but sometimes much more. Leaves 2-5cm long, triangular-ovate in outline, more or less bipinnatifid, the segments linear. Flowers about 1cm across, lilac-purple, in dense, head-likespikes which elongate later, early to late summer. South Dakota to Alabama, west to Arizona and adjacent Mexico.
