Botanical Description

Stems 10-15cm high. Leaves pedicellate, deep green veined, ovate to lanceolate, 2.5-4.5cm long. Flowers stalked, the petals white or pale pink, 1.5-2cm long, spotted and dotted on the inside with purple, in contrast to the bright yellow anthers. Southern Oregon and northern California, in the Siskiyou and coastal mountains. Usually found near water in the wild but does not need to be particularly wet in cultivation and requires very good drainage to thrive. Several selected forms are known but not in general cultivation. Makes a good pot plant and also grows well on the rock garden, though prone to frost damage in some regions.
