Superficially like a dwarf form of T. grandiflorum. Stems reddish-brown, 8-15cm tall. Leaves elliptic to ovate, 3-5cm long, shortly petiolate. Flowers pedicellate, the pure white petals 2.5-4cm long with recurved tips, early to mid-spring. Western Pennsylvania to Nebraska, Missouri and Kentucky on rocky ledges in moist woodland and by rivers and streams often on limestone. Sometimes confused with T. rivale. Best in the alpine house.
