Botanical Description

Stems 20-60cm tall. Leaves sessile, rhomboid, 5-19cm long. Flowers stalked, inclined above the leaves, the petals 2-4cm long, normally red-maroon, but also pure white, yellow, green and pink, some of which are charmingly flecked with deeper shades, the ovaries always deep red-purple to blackish. Eastern Canada south to Georgia. [Pl.499]
