Stems to 60cm tall. Leaves rhomboid to ovate, 10-25cm long with scattered brownish blotches. Flowers sessile, erect, the petals 4-9cm long. In T.c. var. chloropetalum they are brilliant golden-yellow to green, garnet or red-brown but never white. In T.c. var. giganteum they are white or cream to red-brown, never with yellow pigment. California, often in redwood forest.
The white and red forms are the most easily obtainable and in time they form robust, stocky clumps with very large, long lasting flowers. Sometimes offered incorrectly as 'T. californicum' or 'T. sessile californicum', A vigorous species but too big for the rock garden.
