A variable silvery to whitish tomentose subshrublet 15-25cm tall. Leaves more or less densely borne around the much-branched base, linear, sessile, 11.5-3cm by 1-1.5mm, entire, somewhat revolute. Stems erect, 6-15cm, bare except for a few tiny upper bracts. Flowerheads solitary elegant yellow daisies to 3cm in diameter with silver phyllaries, spring. Commonly encountered from the central provinces of Chile to Araucania and northern Andean Patagonia, including Argentina, in well-drained sandy and volcanic ash soils in warm exposures at 100-2000m. Forma discoideus from the Andes of northern Patagonia in Argentina has discoid heads. S. barrosianus is essentially a microform no more than 6-10cm tall with five to seven-rayed, almost stalkless heads with ray florets 5 by 2mm, summer. Its densely leafy stems have leaves only 4-5mm long. Chile, the Andes of Curico, at about 2000m.
