Rhizomatous herbaceous perennial forming patches or colonies 5-20cm high. Leaves kidney-shaped to orbicular, deeply cordate, palmately five to seven lobed, toothed and some-what rugose. Flowers dioecious, solitary 1.5-2.5cm in diameter, with five, sometimes four white petals, summer. Fruits of a few large, red to orange drupelets. Arctic regions and high ground south, in acid peaty soils.
