Botanical Description

Leaves with a long petiole, leathery, almost rounded and without marginal teeth, shiny green above, paler beneath. Flowering stems up to 20cm tall bearing racemes of broadly bell-shaped flowers which vary in colour from greenish-white to pink and red and are large for the genus, from 15 to 20mm across, the petals thick in texture. On rock ledges, usually in base-rich soils throughout the Arctic tundra and northern mountain ranges in Asia and North America. In Europe only in Iceland and northern Russia.
