A dwarf, mat-forming plant. Leaves inrolled as they open, cuneate (widest near apex), smooth, somewhat fleshy, 10-40 mm long by 3-10mm wide, tapering into the winged stalk which may exceed the length of the leaf. Flowers rose-purple with a yellow eye, occasionally white, l-2cm across, two to fifteen in tight umbels on stems 5-15 cm high. Japan (ssp. heterodonta and hakusanensis), wet alpine slopes, along the Siberian coast and across the Bering Straits (ssp. cuneifolia), south to British Columbia in wet meadows often near the coast. P.c. subsp. saxifragoides is found from Alaska to Vancouver Island and has stems to 5cm or less, blunt-toothed leaves and homostylous, self-fertile flowers.
