Botanical Description

Douglas ex Hook. Tufted, from a short caudex or rootstock, the flowering stems to 40cm or more, ascending to erect. Basal leaves digitate with deeply toothed leaflets 3-6cm long, green and silky-hairy above, white tomentose beneath. Flowers yellow, 1.6-2.2cm across with obcordate petals, in dense cymes, summer. Alaska to Baja California and New Mexico, up to 950m in moist prairies and open forest. P.g. subsp. nuttallii, syn. P. nuttallii has less hairy and bicoloured leaves with leaflets sometimes so deeply toothed as to appear lobed. Higher altitude coniferous forest up to 2750m.
