Botanical Description

This is closely allied to P. eximium. Height 5-50cm. Leaves mainly basal with many whorled leaflets which are glandular-hairy and under 1.5cm long, palmately cleft into two to five lobes. Flowers in a head less compact than that of P. eximium, but with larger individual flowers, 2-3cm long, white to deep blue. Rocky Mountains from Canada to New Mexico at high altitudes. P.v. subsp. mellitum (syn. P. mellitum) has a more elongated racemose inflorescence and yellow flowers. Rocky Mountains and Black Hills of South Dakota.
