Douglas ex Lehm. Silvery-hairy perennial from a branched woody rootstock with flowering stems 20-50cm tall. Lower leaves lanceolate, 3-10cm long by 5-25mm wide, on slender stalks as long as the blades. Stem-leaves decreasing in size upwards. Flowers in dense terminal cymes 2-10cm long, white to lavender, 4-6mm long and wide, the stamens protruding, summer. Mountains of western North America. P.h. var. alpina is lower-growing, less silvery and generally has lavender flowers. From higher elevations, it should prove hardier than the type species.
