Rhizomatous perennial, 5-20cm in height, forming neat clumps of rosettes. Leaves somewhat glaucous, 3-9cm long, broadly ovate-spathulate, the round tips undulate or obscurely toothed, tapering to a false petiole. Flowerheads solitary, up to 3cm long, broadly bell-shaped, blue, lilac or white, the outer florets with rays 5-11mm long. Chile and Argentina in the southern lake and volcano district often near the snowline, in sand and gravel or ash, at 1400-2000m. P. variabilis is similar but 20cm or more tall, with glandular downy leaves and the outer floral bracts bearing spiny teeth. Same distribution as P. bellidifolia.
