Botanical Description

Stems 15-50cm tall. Leaves entire, relatively thick and fleshy, often folded, 1.5-8cm long. Thyrse elongated, of five to fifteen verticillasters, tending to be secund. Flowers 1.7-2.2cm long, true red to crimson, sometimes deep pink or pink-purple. Sagebrush and pinyon-juniper communities, often in sandstone derived soils at 1200-2000m. Utah, Nevada, Arizona, California. April-June. The most brilliant red penstemon. Probably needs pH>7.5 and a warm site.
