Stems 20-80cm tall, leaves entire, mostly cauline, 2-6cm long, oblanceolate to linear to oblong, usually folded. Thyrse often raceme-like. Flowers 1.4-2.4cm long, blue-violet to purplish blue. Dry sagebrush and open juniper and ponderosa pine communities at 400-1000m in central Oregon, California and Nevada. Little cultivated, although very attractive. P.l. var. roezlii is 20-50cm tall, glandular hairy in inflorescence only. Leaves entire, up to 8cm long. Mostly lanceolate to linear oblong. Flowers deep blue-violet, 1.5-2.5cm long. Dry, often rocky or gravelly open slopes and flats among sagebrush and grasses. Oregon to California and Nevada. Bears no relation to Penstemon roezlii of hort.
