Stems 10-45cm tall. Leaves entire to regularly serrate, glabrous or puberulent. Narrowly oblanceolate to linear or lanceolate. 2-10cm long. Inflorescence many-flowered, secund. Flowers orchid or blue lavender, 2.5-3.2cm long. Southeastern Colorado to New Mexico and Texas at about 1990m. Easy in sun. Highly variable taxon. The tubby flowers are quite striking.
