and M. violacea). Clump-forming to widely so. Leaves 2-6cm long shortly kidney-shaped to rounded cordate, usually shallowly five-lobed and crenate, long-stalked. Racemes leafless, 20-40cm tall, the flowers at least partially in a row on one side. Flowers white, the petals ovate, divided into three short, broad lobes at the tips, late spring and early summer. California to British Columbia and Alberta, in mountain woods and shaded open slopes at 1000-2000m. M. diversifolia \ similar, but the upper three leaf lobes are angular (broadly and bluntly triangular), the raceme sometimes has one leaf, the flowers are alternately disposed and the petals have three to five narrower lobes. California to Washington State only, mainly in conifer forest.
