ex DC. (syn. M. langsdorfii, M. luteus var. guttatus). Much like M. luteus in general appearance but usually taller, to 60cm or more, spreading by creeping stems and stolons. Leaves 3-8cm long, coarsely and sometimes deeply toothed. Flowers to 4cm long, yellow, usually red-spotted at least in the throat, summer. California to Alaska, in wet places in many habitats, sea level in the north, to 3000m in California. Widely naturalised in the British Isles and Europe. A variable species as to stature and flower size in the wild. Among varieties, M.g. var. littoralis, syn. M. langsdorfii var. grandis, is more tender, more robust and with flowers to 4.5cm long. Several cultivars are available, mainly of hybrid origin; see M. X variegatus.
