A glabrous perennial forming clumps of basal rosettes and flowering stems to 8cm high. Leaves ovate, toothed, short-stalked, 3-4cm long with a dark transverse bar. Flowers yellow, 1.5cm long, in crowded terminal clusters, summer in the wild. Chile in the high desert Atacama cordilleras by streamlets and in swamps. M.d. var. nanus is a miniature version to 2.5cm high with leaves 5mm and mainly solitary flowers 6mm long.
