Botanical Description

Neatly mat-forming perennial 2-10cm tall, covered in a dense mixture of short down, tiny glochids and longer coarse and brittle spiny hairs. Leaves ovate to oblong-ovate in outline, 5-23 by 3-9mm, pinnatifid, the oblong-rounded, sessile divisions very close-set and overlapping, the uppermost entire, those nearer the base somewhat divided around the margins. Flowering stems thickly leafy. Flowers usually solitary, yellow, white-centred, upright, 1.8-2.8cm across with widely spreading concave petals, summer in the wild. Chile and Argentina in the southern volcano and lake district, on steep mobile screes, loose sandy, gravelly summit flats and among boulders on bare rocky slopes at 1600-2500m. Apart from L. sigmoidea, the only dwarf species with ferny foliage. [Pl.257].
