A well known clump-forming member of the western U.S.A. series Californicae, usually 30-40cm tall but sometimes less or more, especially in the wild. Leaves to 2cm wide, deep green, red-flushed at the base, evergreen. Flowers 7-10cm across, in shades of purple to lavender with darker veining and a yellow zone on the falls, late spring to early summer. California to southern Oregon, mainly in open places near the sea, sometimes in light woodland.
