About 25-50cm in height. Basal leaves long-stalked, the blades to 15cm long, pinnate, the leaflets sometimes cleft, sharply toothed, the upper surface harshly and sparsely short hairy. Flowers about 1cm long, violet to white, early to late summer. H.f. var. albifrons has the leaflets densely white hairy beneath. California to British Columbia and Idaho, in pine and fir forest, mostly above 1600m.
