Sieversia rivale). Clump to colony-forming, 20-30cm tall. Leaves composed of three to six pairs of small, irregularly-shaped leaflets, and a large, usually deeply three-lobed terminal one to 5cm long. Flowers nodding, bell-shaped, 1.5cm long, with a prominent brownish-pink calyx and small cream to pink petals. G.r. var. 'Album' has pale green calyces and white petals. Much of Europe, Siberia, Canada and northeastern U.S.A. in damp to wet places, sometimes in woods. Hybrids between the tall, weedy, small yellow-flowered urbanum and rivale are not infrequent and are known as G. X intermedium. Some of the best hybrid plants have been named and are garden-worthy. The following favour G. rivale, but have somewhat larger flowers: 'Leonards Variety' has coppery-pink petals, those of 'Lionel Cox' are yellow.
