Botanical Description

Leaves well marbled in two shades or brown. Scape 10cm with one flower. Inner three tepals bright golden yellow outer three petals flushed red-brown on the exterior, spotted and/or flecked inside, no auricles. Anthers reddish-brown, style obscurely lobed. Some forms increase rapidly by stolons, often at the expense of flowering. Lack of disturbance and occasional feeding seem to partially overcome this. Eastern U.S.A. and Canada in moist woodland and grassland. [Pl.171]
