ex Benth. Mat-forming from a branching caudex. Leaves lanceolate to narrowly elliptic, silvery, woolly, 1-2.5cm long. Flowering stems leafless, 15-25cm tall, flowers pink or white. California to Nevada and Arizona mainly below 1500m in rocky and gravelly places including open woodland. E.w. subsp. subscaposum is more densely mat-forming with smaller leaves and flowering stems 10-20cm tall. Sierra Nevada at 1500-3150m.
