Perennial from a stout, few-branched, woody rootstock, up to 10cm tall in bloom. Leaves basal, ovate to rounded, glabrous, 1.5-2cm long, on equally long villous petioles. Infloresceences in head-like or looser umbels, subtended by lanceolate bracts. Flowers white to rose, late summer. California to Washington and Montana, mainly in alpine fell-fields, gravelly and sandy slopes at 2500-3150m.
