Woody based perennial, the short stems retaining withered leaves from previous years. Leaves dense, rosetted, l-4cm long, rounded to ovate, densely tomentose, especially beneath. Flowering stems 10-20cm long, decumbent or prostrate, bearing leafy bracts and two to several rayed umbels. Flowers white to rose, usually as they age, mid to late summer. California to western Nevada on gravelly slopes and ridges and alpine fell fields at 1530-3600m. E.l. war. robustum Torr. and Gray has extra large primrose-yellow flowerheads. Nevada only.
