from a well branched woody rootstock, 30cm or more across by 3-8cm tall in bloom. Leaves elliptic to oblongspathulate, 5-9mm long, densely white tomentose, crowded on the short branches. Flowerheads solitary, almost globular, composed of many 6mm long yellow flowers which later age reddish, summer. California to Idaho, Montana and Colorado, in sagebrush scrub, juniper and pine woodland at 1550-2650m.
