Hummockforming from a stout taproot, to 15cm or more across. Leaves crowded, densely white-bristly, linear, 5-20mm long. Flowerheads solitary, 1.3-2.3cm across, the rays white or pink, borne on stems 2-6cm in height. California to Nevada and Utah, in dry gravelly, often limey soils in open pine-juniper woodland at 2000-2500m. A desirable species, but needs alpine house treatment in wet climates.
