Tufted to hummock-forming, up to 15cm in height. Leaves dense, mostly basal, linear, 2-8cm long, hispidly hairy, arching. Flowerheads solitary, 3-5cm or more in diameter, the rays yellow. A variable species in the wild, very small-flowered (var. brevifolius), and those with very short ray florets (var. austiniae) being worthless horticulturally. California to Nevada and Washington State, in dry open places, often amongst sagebrush (Artemesia tridentata). E.c. 'Grand Ridge', is dwarfer, more compact and very free-flowering, the bright yellow blooms opening from spring to autumn.
