Leaves linear, to 23cm long, hardly stalked. Flowers pink to purple, about 1.5cm across, four to sixteen on a stem to 20cm tall. Eastern United States in moist peaty soils. Var. traceyi is larger in all its parts with leaves to 50cm long, darker flowers to 2cm across and green glandular hairs. It has a more southerly distribution and needs the pirotection of the alpine house in winter.
