Stem 40-90cm in height with up to seven ovate to lanceolate white-hairy leaves. Flowers solitary to two or three, the lip broadly ovoid, 3-5cm long, usually white, strongly suffused or banded pink to crimson-pink, sepals and petals white. Eastern North America from Newfoundland to Georgia, in damp woods, swamps and bogs. Perhaps the most showy of all the hardy cypripediums and easily grown in a peat bed or a humusy pocket in the rock garden.
