Claytonia Species in
Claytonia
Family: Portulacaceae

About 15 species of perennials from the northern temperate zone and South America, but mainly western North America. They are akin to Lewisia, with mainly tufts or rosettes of simple basal leaves from a fleshy rootstock or corm. The five-petalled wide spreading flowers are in racemose clusters.

Uses

The species described can be placed in two groups, those from woodland habitats and those from open mountain slopes and crevices. The mountain species are best in raised or scree beds or dry walls. Though they appreciate plenty of moisture when actively growing, the compost must be very free draining. The woodlanders will grow in sun or partial shade and do best in a humus-rich rooting medium. Propagation by seed when ripe or as soon after as possible, in a cold frame.
