Botanical Description

Stems 30-70cm tall, fairly stout, erect herb with lanceolate basal foliage 15-30cm long, the sheathing cauline leaves much smaller. Spikes dense to lax with up to twelve rich yellowish-orange flowers (rarely white within), up to 7cm wide and bearing strong green and orange veins, seven-nerved lip 2.3 by 1.2cm, simple to tongue-shaped to obscurely fiddle-shaped, rounded at the base. N o callused thickenings occur on either lip or tepals. Chile, from Curico to Valdivia, in part-shaded, warm clearings of montane and subalpine bamboo scrub, nothofagus and araucaria woodlands on volcanic sands at 500-2000m.
