Stems slender, 30-80cm tall, erect, topped by a spike of six to fourteen flowers. Basal leaves lanceolate, withered by flowering time, a few short, very narrow and acute stem leaves remaining. Flowers 4-6cm across, deep to bright yellow, the sepals somewhat down-curving with green tips, the petals forming a tunnel with a simple rhomboid to somewhat trilobed lip (to 3 by 2.5cm ), its surface bearded with green filiform papillae and the other margin deeply and acutely toothed to laciniate. Chile, from the central coastal range to Araucania, in sandy pastures, waysides and woodland clearings at 500-1500m. Flowering November to January in the wild.
