Botanical Description

Stoutly erect, sometimes forming clumps 20-40cm tall. Basal leaves lanceolate, persisting during flowering with shorter, somewhat spreading cauline foliage distributed up the stems. Flowers waxy deep yellow to 6cm across, the trilobed lip 2 by 1.3cm with the outer lobes hemispherical, the central one rounded and the margins incurled, usually entire, but sometimes slightly crenellated, borne in loose spikes of three to six. Chile and Argentina, from the central cordilleras at 1500-2000m to arid southeastern Patagonia at up to 50m, in sheltered rocky slopes and hollows, volcanic sand fields and bunch-grass clearings in woodland. Flowers November to January in the wild.
