Botanical Description

or sometimes annual, 20-40cm tall. Basal leaves obovate to oblong, mainly entire. Stem leaves smaller with incised margins. Floral bracts three to five-lobed, bright scarlet-tipped (white in forma alba and yellowish in forma lutescens). Flowers pale yellow, late spring to late summer. Eastern North America, in prairies and meadows where the soil is moist. Probably parasitic on grasses.
