from a woody rootstock, with simple or sparingly branched stems 15-40cm high. Floral bracts scarlet-tipped, with two pairs of lobes. Flowers 2.5-3cm long, having a scarlet-tipped calyx and green red-edged corolla, late spring to late summer. Oregon and California to Wyoming and New Mexico, above 600m, mostly in sagebrush or shad-scale scrub (Artemisia tridentata and Atriplex confertifolia), also in pine/juniper woodland.
