Clump to mat-forming, 20-40cm in height, spreading by stolons. Leaves deciduous, non-pinnate (or reduced to a single leadet), the basal ones long-stalked; blade rounded to kidney-shaped, somewhat crenate and wavy-margined, to 10cm or more across. Flowers white, rarely pinkish, about 1.5cm in diameter, starting to open in early spring with the young foliage. Pyrenees, Alps and Apennines in meadows and by streams at alpine or subalpine elevation.
