Tufted and small tuft-forming from a thick to markedly swollen rootstock. Stems erect, 20-30cm in height, sometimes more. Basal leaves oblanceolate more or less crenate, sometimes papillose, stalked. Middle stem leaves sessile, oblong elliptic to obovate or ovate. Flowers, usually one per stem, broadly funnel-shaped, erect, to 4cm wide with prominent arching lobes, blue. C.s. subsp. filicaulis is taller, the middle stem leaves stalked. Subsp. spruneriana has lanceolate middle stem leaves and two to five flowers per stem. Southern Balkan Peninsula (subsp. filicaulis only on Crete), in mountain grassland (also lowland scrub for subsp.
spruneriana).
