This very familiar clump to colony-forming border perennial with its 90cm tall racemes of large blue or white bells is too large for the rock garden. Its pygmy mutant, C.p. 'Planiflora' (syn. C. planiflora and C. nitida) is however, desirable. This forms dense rosettes of small dark, evergreen, oblanceolate, crinkle-edged leaves in tufts or clumps and erect stems rarely above 20cm in height. The 2-3cm wide flowers are blue, those of 'Planiflora Alba', white.
