from slender branching rhizomes, with erect slender stems 6-12cm in height. Radical leaves in sparse rosettes, oblanceolate, few-toothed, long-stalked. Stem leaves sessile, lanceolate. Flowers solitary, more or less erect, bell-shaped with prominent lobes, blue, 2-2.5cm long. Japan, Kuriles, Kamchatka, Aleutians and Alaska, on sandy and gravelly alpine slopes. Needs scree treatment with protection from too much winter wet; slug prone.
