Botanical Description

Height 15-50cm. Stem erect, branched with bulbils. Flowers one to three, erect, widely campanulate, white, yellow, orange, pink, purple or red, the petals with a conspicuous dark red blotch in the centre, sometimes with a paler blotch above and slender hairs above the glands which are not depressed, quadrangular, densely hairy. The colour and the markings of the flowers are extremely variable. California in the Sierra Nevada and the Coast Ranges in light, sandy soils. This is one of the best of the Mariposa section and has been grown successfully in rich scree conditions in the rock garden.
