Tufted habit from a branched, more-or-less woody base. Leaves oblanceolate, to 3cm long, densely downy. Capitula up to fifteen or more in a terminal panicle on stems 8-15cm in height, bracts downy, usually tinted pink or red. North-western U.S.A. in mountain conifer forest, sagebrush scrub and other dry places.
