From 15cm upwards in height. Main stems leafy. Leaves twisted, green, oblanceolate, always distinctively corrugated or wavy along the margins, a main point of identification. Flowers widely funnel-shaped, the tepals 3.5-5.7cm long, the outers obovate-truncate to obcordate-rounded, always bluntly mucronate, the inners oblanceolate with a rounded or truncate tip, pale to rich violet, in umbels. Patterning on the upper tepal pair varies considerably, from quite heavy darkish violet stippling over a yellow cross-band to a practically unmarked white cross-band. Chile, at oases along the Atacama coastline. [Pl.10]
