About 240 species of mainly evergreen perennials largely from tropical and subtropical countries but a few from temperate regions. They are tufted to clump-forming, sometimes bulbous, with grassy leaves and flower spikes which resemble single flower buds. The latter are formed of closely fitting bracts from between which one, or rarely two, three-petalled flowers open each day.

Uses

Propagation is by seed which may take a long time to germinate, or division in spring carried out with care.
